From Disruption to Up-ruption: Innovation Aligned with Societal Evolution with Greg Bernarda

Over the past 20 years, the business world has become enamored with the term “disruption.” But disruptive innovation, while sometimes necessary, can also create unintended effects. Disruption moves value around, dividing the disruptors and leaving behind the disrupted. It does not address what society needs to tackle its more complex, global issues and create a better world.

It’s time to move beyond disruption. This month, members will meet with Greg Bernanda, who was recently nominated for the Thinkers50 Radar List for his concept of ‘up-ruption’. Up-ruption is an invitation to rise from an era of disruption to an era of higher meaning and new value creation. It surpasses disruption by lifting everyone up and creating shared value. In this session, members will learn how up-ruption can address global challenges and pave the way for a brighter future.

Greg Bernarda borrows from the fields of leadership, psychology, innovation, and design to show executives how to create positive value to their stakeholders and to themselves. He argues that while we are facing systemic issues and challenges, organizations can play a role in (re)designing business ecosystems to further societal progress. Greg is the co-author of Value Proposition Design, the sequel to Business Model Generation. Previously, he worked at the World Economic Forum on initiatives to address global and industry challenges.
