Leveraging talent to explode the boundaries of what a strategy office can deliver

*Outthinker Miami Chapter Founding Member

Stephen Von Oehsen

SVP, Office of Strategic Management at Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits
&
Executive-in-Residence at the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management

Full Bio

Leaders from the Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits Office of Strategic Management will share learnings and insights from their journey over the past two decades of building a high-impact office of strategic management. Outthinker Network executive members will walk away with insights and ideas for their own strategy office.  Stephen Von Oehsen, SVP of SGWSs Office of Strategic Management and several of his OSM colleagues will share how they built a strategy office that is:

  • An engine for the development of future senior leaders across the organization
  • A diverse team that brings unique perspectives from different background, experiences, and cultures
  • A powerful recruiter of top talent with leading retention rates
  • Designing the future of the organization and leading key transformation efforts to achieve their long term goals

AI research update & workshop

Augmenting strategic dialogues with generative AI

Valery Yukobovich

Executive Director of the Wharton Mack Institute for Innovation Management

Full Bio

There is a growing anticipation that Generative AI can substantially enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of strategic decision-making processes, such as scenario planning and executive offsites. This belief is underpinned by several assumptions:

  • Generative AI’s creative capabilities could introduce novel ideas, thereby circumventing the prevalent ‘groupthink’ phenomenon in teams’ discussions
  • The technology may act as an impartial participant, uncovering biases in agreements and offering diverse perspectives
  • By adopting roles such as ‘Devil’s Advocate’, generative AI could facilitate pre-mortem analyses and other enriching methods that expand viewpoints and foster well-informed decision-making
  • Generative AI could streamline consolidation of meeting outcomes and expedite the information dissemination process

This collaborative session will be a hands-on strategic dialogue between participants to further our collective understanding of how to use Gen AI to change the nature of strategic reflection and ideation in organizations. The session will also inform possible research avenues to be executed by Outthinker in partnership with the Wharton School’s Mack Institute.

Outthinker roundtable

How long-term focused executives can thrive in a short-term world with Dorie Clark

Dorie Clark

Best-selling author, and top-ranked global management thinker

Full Bio

The strategy function takes a long-term outlook by design. Future-focused strategy executives often pay a price for being long-term minded in a short-term world. Their function and role is vulnerable to being criticized for their future orientation especially when the organization feels pressure to demonstrate financial austerity, hit quarterly targets to satisfy shareholders, or in response to an external shock or change in the market.

How can executives in a world that naturally gravitates toward the short-term, “play the long game” and create a secure future for both their organization and individual career? In this roundtable, Dorie and Outthinker Network peers will dig into topics like:

  • How to prioritize what matters most in the short-term in a way that builds toward long-term goals
  • Strategies to get other executives and peers to understand the long-game and outlook
  • Moves you can take as a strategy executive to create job security for a long-term role in a short-term world

Outthinker Networks is pleased to welcome Dorie Clark. Dorie has been named three times as one of the Top 50 business thinkers in the world by Thinkers50, and was recognized as the #1 Communication Coach in the world by the Marshall Goldsmith Leading Global Coaches Awards. Clark, a consultant and keynote speaker, teaches executive education at Columbia Business School, and she is the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Long GameEntrepreneurial YouReinventing You and Stand Out, which was named the #1 Leadership Book of the Year by Inc. magazine. A frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review, she consults and speaks for clients including Google, Microsoft, and the World Bank.
